Perhaps in the current political climate you could look at some of the Supreme Court challenges- currently the best one seems to be the Supreme Court challenge on prorogation. Relationship between the judiciary and the executive/legislative.
Other than that more law specific you could look at the potential of blockchain, contrast of law in another country and the UK (albeit massive task).
Hope those are some ideas, not sure criminal wise- perhaps analysis of a criminal case.
