Hi,

I'm currently resitting my English Literature A-Level and wanted to explore reasons for why I performed poorly. I think overall, I had lots of the knowledge but what let me down is the writing and structures of my essays. I wanted to get some opinions from English Literature students about how they may write their essays and structure their arguments.

I have often (in the past) under 'discuss' essays in which an extract is given formed an argument but always felt I was moving onto completely different points and countering my own arguments with 'However' but I'm now not so sure if this is an effective way to approach the question and whether I should stick to fewer points and remain on the main argument?

I'm also struggling with questions which ask to compare/contrast. For instance, in my AQA exams I am asked to compare/contrast prose (Gatsby) to poetry (Love through the ages) and I'm not completely sure how to cohesively structure an answer and how to alternate between the two or how to lay my argument out.

How do you guy suggest I should improve and how do you personally structure/write your essays?
