How do you improve analysing poems on the spot for their implications meaning and things like that?

1. Learn as many literary terms as you can. If you don't know that a technique exists, you can't spot it!
2. Understand what different techniques usually imply, e.g. caesura can often suggest a fragmented perspective on the world. This about what a technique does to the flow and rhythm of a poem, as this can often indicate it impacts.
3. Apply these meanings to the theme of the poem. If the poem's about old age and movement, caesura might imply difficulty moving such as staggering or feeling unbalanced.
