The number 72 appears all over religious mythology:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/72_(number)#In_religion

The writers of the Quran would have been aware of this.

That number is a complete fabrication from a completely mistranslated Hadith and is frequently used by Alt righters and ISIS alike to convince people to align with their political beliefs.

It's not true so I wouldn't worry about it.

They do exist but the number of 72 has dubious origins, though described as "fair ones" or "companions", described as having not been "touched by man or jinn" before (i.e. virgins), "wide and beautiful/lovely eyes","eyes like pearls",and "full-breasted" or "voluptuous".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houri#...272_virgins%22

Probably different standards when they thought it up in the 7th century?

It's to get niave individuals to put themselfes forward for war [Jihad]

I mean if they only promissed them only 1 virgin, they'd have few people willing to die for them.
Even if they promissed 5, they'd be muslims saying "Well I can just go marry 5 women anyway. Why am I gonna go sacrifice my life for it?"

but when you promise 72 [something realistically beyond their reaches on earth], you get men willing to die for it.

It's the smallest positive integer whose fifth power can be expressed as the sum of 5 other fifth powers, I'd think that's probably why.

2 are 60 foot tall houris, ie non human beings created to give pleasure 24/7, with transparent skin and black eyes. The other 70 are women dragged up out of hell to serve males in their idea of 'paradise.' A hedonistic concept if ever there was one.
