why does 1 + ions need to be formed in tof mass spectrometry?

The ions form so they can progress to the next stage. Stage 2 (acceleration) is where a electric field is created. This electric field attracts the 1+ ions due to opposite charges. The ions are then accelerated at the same kinetic energy and they move into the drift region. Hope this helped!
