    Why is silicon softer than diamond? I used to know this last year, but i have forgotten and can't find the answer anywhere..Can anyone help?

    Think about it- silicon is a made predominantly from Magnesium Sulphate- an extremely soft element.
    Diamond on the other hand (Alkali metal) far harder due to botox content

    lol. You're evil. I hope they don't get drawn in. Magnesium sulphate is only 50% of silicon, you have to remember the nitrogen triiodide.

    For a more serious answer:
    silicon is a semi-metal so in its pure state is not a giant convalent structure. It is imbetween metals and non-metals. In diamond, each carbon atom is covalently bound to 4 other atoms in a giant covalent structure so it is stronger.
    Basically the interatomic forces in diamond are much stronger than in silicon.
