    Alkaline hydrolysis of a ketone, is this possible?

    What you can do with ketones and alkali is deprotonize an alpha carbon atom.

    What you mean by hydrolysis of a ketone, though, is beyond me. Actually seperating the two alkane chains? Not with alkali. If the hydroxid anion adds to the carbon, you have HO-(R1-)C(-R2)-O(-) , and if you lower the pH by adding acid, the hydroxid anion will simply leave again, so nothing will happen, I think.

    Using alkali periodate or perchromate, or permanganate, yes. Not using alkali as in alkali hydroxide. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
