I am currently stuck on which Oxford college I should apply for art to; Brasenose, Exeter or Magdalen? I don't have long before I send in my application but want to know more about each and their arts provisions/student life. Help!
I don't know about the arts, but Magdalen is really beautiful. The deer park is really what made me apply there to be honest . But don't sweat it, all of the colleges at Oxford are great - as you know - and you'll love whatever one you get accepted by.

I'd suggest applying to Brasenose or Magdalen, as your accommodation will be near/ on-site for most of your degree. That makes life much easier, I think!

My son was at Exeter for languages, and loved his college. He also used to know a girl who read fine art there very well. She was very happy at Exeter and used to do paintings with her boobs, as well as holding art exhibitions. We still have one of her prints in his bedroom. Plus there is the Turl Street arts festival
Have you seen how gorgeous Exeter College is? I have to catch my breath every time I walk into main quad, it's so gorgeous. The chapel is simply the most beautiful in the world (imho) and the hall is amazing. Plus the view from the mound: there's nothing like it! It's quite easy to go and visit Exeter, it's open from 2-5pm most days. Do pay it a visit and fall seriously in love!!!

The arts festival is definitely swaying and so far it does look incredible! I'll see if I can visit soon, but if not I shall go off your advice! It's currently down as my choice, so I shall see what happens

It looks like Magdalen has 1st years off-site, which a bit of a turn-off even though it is close. Accommodation looks good in all of them though, which is making it more difficult to choose!!! But I'll check out Brasenose in more detail Do you know if there is a difference in application rates between the two? Or does it not matter?

I definitely agree about loving whichever one I go to, I just want to make sure that IF I got in I did chose the best one for me (as you probably understand). Magdalen's deer park does seem pretty cool

@chloepascale I would definitely visit Exeter!! Phone the porter's lodge beforehand though, because if there's an event going on you may not be able to go to the sublime mound, where you can climb up and get the best view in the whole world! Plus the Radcliffe Camera (my avatar) is lit up at night and looks blooming gorgeous. My son often used to go there at night and felt at peace there.
The staff (porters, dining staff etc) still remember A and they always discuss fond memories they have of him, even now two years after he left. His college wife is still there, studying for her PhD and it was wonderful to see her again! And let's remember, it's not the buildings that are important (stunning as they are). It's the people.

All true that! It sounds so stunning with the mound and the Rad Cam, perhaps I will choose Exeter

Hola chloepascale,
Fine Art admissions are run centrally by the Ruskin School and so you can make your choice in the certain knowledge that the elements of the process that result in interview/offer decisions are made in exactly the same way regardless of the College you choose. All teaching is also provided centrally by the Ruskin so there is absolutely no difference between any of the colleges in terms of tuition or access to particular Tutors.
Brasenose offers three places a year for Fine Art which means that steady-state we expect to have nine students on course. Our Fine Art Tutor is Ian Kiaer and he is also the college's "curator of pictures". This week we are installing a number of pieces from the Ingram Collection of C20th British Art which is the latest initiative to raise the profile of the subject in the College. We are particularly excited by an Eduardo Paolozzi sculpture which will stand in our entrance quad!
We can't speak for Exeter or Magdalen but believe that these two other colleges similarly promote the subject and we are all equidistant from the Ruskin: Magdalene is a bit closer to the Bullingdon building while we and Exeter may be marginally closer to the Ruskin on the High Street.
Good luck with your application and thanks for posting!
Hi Brasenose! It's great to hear that admissions are independent to Ruskin. And thanks for the info on the college and it's art provision, the artists and art you have at the moment sound awesome. I'd definitely like somewhere that embraces art too! Just wondering if you know the number of art students in the other colleges?

We can tell you how many offers the three colleges you are interested in made for Fine Art last cycle.
Brasenose 3, Exeter 1, Magdalen 2.
As we have said, however, choice of college will not influence whether or not you are made an offer. This is generally true for all courses but for Fine Art it is a certainty because of the way in which the Ruskin select.Last year, 7 students applying to us for Fine Art were made offers. We plan to make 4 offers for entry in 2020.

Magdalen accomodation is a short distance offsite for first year and isn't particularly nice, but 2nd and third-year accommodation in its big old buildings more than makes up for it in my opinion! Brasenose has 2nd years offsite and from I've heard it is quite poor accomodation. Though the college itself is lovely.
In terms of applications, Brasenose always gets absolutely loads, so does Magdalen but I don't think as much. I don't think it makes any difference in terms of whether you get into Oxford, but it does perhaps mean you're more likely to be reassigned to another college before/ after interview. There's lots of beautiful colleges out there though so that isn't the worst thing.

Hola EnglishStudent,
College applied can't make a difference for Fine Art because the colleges do not take the selection decisions (in other subjects there are controls to avoid college choice having an effect on the outcome but for Fine art there is no need for checks). In the last cycle, we received more applications (31) than Magdalen (21) but reallocation didn't take place prior to interviews: we hosted 11 candidates. The reallocation happened post-interview and 7 of the 11 candidates we hosted received offers.
Our 2nd year annexe is at Frewin which is very central and about 5 minutes walk away. We are putting very significant resource into Frewin but do not plan on increasing rents to reflect these improvements!
We agree that there are many lovely colleges and in a sense applicants are spoiled for choice!
