Im having difficulty forming an opinion on something and am interested to see the opinions people have and the arguments for them.

The likes of Shell, BP, Exxon Mobil, etc are often targeted by protesters due to them continuing to extract and use fossil fuels.

But are these companies not some of the biggest investors in research into clean technology (Carbon Capture, Renewables, Biomass etc)?
So do profits from oil and gas fund development of a greener society?

They are good in thecsense thatvthey supply the world with the energy soirce it craves. But bad in that what they are doing is harming the planet especially when they are well placed to invest in alternative forms of energy. But to vilify the oil companies and blame them for global warming is short sighted.

They are simply providing the world something that is clearly necessary in the present day.

Their attempts to invest in renewables are for the most part little more than PR stunts. Overall the damage done to the environment by continuing to exploit non renewable resources is just not worth it, especially when other sources of funding exist (taxing even a little of the massive bonuses earned by corporate bosses and stowed away in tax havens or introducing a more comprehensive pollution tax for example). I see the argument, but the cost of letting these companies carry on as they are is too great.
