Want to do Dentistry but study applied Science.

A bit of context, I've been wanting to do Dentistry for the longest time I can remember but sadly didn't get A's and A*s for GCSEs, mainly bs and c's as I didn't realise at the time how important they were for undergraduate.

As a result, due to not being able to mainly study chemistry because of Maths, I've been studying Btec Level 3 Applied Science Extended Diploma and I'm currently in year 13 (will be turning 19 before end of year) with predicted DDD, preparing to submit my UCAS by the end of the month.

My question is that I'm planning on studying Biomedical Science and then hopefully want to apply for Postgraduate entry for Dentistry, but will me studying applied science and not getting A's at GCSEs deter me from other applicants? Is it possible for me to reach my goal if I work hard and attain a 1st Class in Biomed, if so which Universities accept biomed for post grad under my circumstances? Has anyone gone to Dentistry from biomedical science with applied science?

Sorry about the long typing, but I've been stressed out for the longest time due to the fact I don't know which courses to apply for to boost my chances when applying for graduate entry, is it worth me pursuing this dream or is it impossible?

Hi there!
If you're applying for the grad entry courses there are now only 3 courses available unless you could do dentistry as a second undergraduate degree? (there's less funding available for these). As far as grad entry routes are concerned i THINK KCL and Aberdeen require a 2:1 degree and above and won't look at your previous GCSE or A levels. I'm not 100% but that's what i gather form their websites and UCAS. However UCLan - "2:1 Degree in a Biomedical discipline, plus 3 A-Levels at grade C or above (at least 2 must be from Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics)" so that would rule out that option only. I don't know much about the entry requirements for the undergrad courses as a graduate though I'm afraid.
Hope that helps!

Your GCSE’s won’t be a problem, but the predicted DDD will be. What did you get in your mocks?

no the DDD is distinctions for applied science

Correct - well only 2 in england and 1 in scotland. It's crazy :frown:

Edit - you can apply to undergrad courses as a graduate but as i said earlier there isn't as much funding available for this and I'm unsure of the entry requirements!

Hi, I am also in the situation currently, and I noticed that you posted this as of 5 years ago, wow 😮, so im not certain if I shall get a reply or not, but I was just wondering did you ever get into dentistry, and how was your experience doing applied science, and if you had any tips I would highly appreciate them. Thanks ☺️
