I replaced rear discs, pads and calipers on my Vauxhall Vectra C.

The caliper return spring popped off so I had to bend the spring and pull it with pliers to get it to go back on, afterwards it felt slack holding the car on about 5 clicks.

Someone on google said drive with handbrake on for a few miles and it should sort it, so I drove the car for around 2 miles with handbrake on and when I got home I smelled burning.

could any damage have been caused ?

thanks

it depends, im not super educated on cars, but if it was a short distance and not at high speed i cant imagine much damage would be done, but in the long term it could damage your breakpads etc.
if youre worried get a professional to look at it, its better to be safe than sorry, especially in a car

At this point I don’t think Vauxhall reliability is the problem to your never ending issues, it’s you. Why would that even be a good idea, doing that stresses components not to mention it’s not safe.

You should make a video series on your endless attempts at being a car mechanic

Driving with handbrake will cause brakes overheating and a burning smell. You can let it cool and the smell will eventually go, and check damage in the seal of the caliper.

I wonder how Cleverboy thinks brakes work. Clearly not friction, must be some other magical force.

For those keeping track, (an extremely abbreviated list):

How much does a small windshield chip usually cost to repair ?
Can a windshield chip be repaired twice ?
Was my windshield chip repaired wrong ?
Windscreen resin not curing properly in repaired pit. it's able to be scraped out
How difficult /easy is to fit an exhaust clamp ?
Is it okay to secure exhaust with a Jubilee clip ?
The front windscreen wipers suddenly stopped working, why ?
Is it okay to swap 16 inch wheels for 17 inch wheels ?
cambelt and water pump replaced, drove car home now not starting ?
took door panel off, now the car won't open from inside?
Why does my car not start and make a clicking noise ?
Why do the front fog lamps on my car not work ?
How would I know if the engine mount had gone on my car ?
Did my friend rip me off when fitting a alternator ?
New backbox hitting inside of bumper, what to do ?
Is it normal for the temp gauge to go past half way slightly ?
Can I drive without rear brake pads to drive the car shop to buy new ones ?
Pressing brake pedal with no pads in caliper/connected ? ( brake and disc job )
Car not starting after timing belt change, did drive home but not starting now
Did I cross thread sump bolt when doing oil changer ? plug was tight to put back in.
Is it difficult to replace a windshield yourself ?
Would a 2007 car pass mot without front fog lamps working ?
why has Rear brake pads on one side worn right down, only replaced 6 months ago.
Is it difficult to bleed brakes ? just replaced caliper
Would a gasoline car battery jump starter work on a diesel car ?
Driving with car handbrake on then burning smell?

In all seriousness, Cleverboy1991, you are not skilled in vehicle repair. Your car is likely dangerous. Take it to a mechanic.

He's cleverly making me reconsider why I take my car to the garage once or twice a year. Think of the money I could save!

I'm no mechanic, but I remember when I did my driving tests my instructor did say something about if you smell burning metal than you are doing something very wrong. I would research further if I was you and maybe even take your car in to be serviced.

Did your instructor ever tell you to drive with your handbrake on

It's all part of the fun! Try and fix something then break three more things! It's a game of whack a mole!

You replaced the calipers? Does this car have separate calipers for the handbrake?

Wow. Do you have a Haynes Workshop Manual?

If you think that you damaged the spring, replace it. Driving round with the brakes on isn't a good idea. You need to do brake work right, for obvious reasons.
