What is the best application for recording and mixing your own music?

It really depends on what Computer you have and good ones tend to be really pricey but for Mac I would go with Logic Pro x it has a super easy User interface and it's easy to get the hang of but for Windows a very popular one is Fl studio (also available on Mac) also has very simple interference and has larger community with making templates and plug ins

I understand Logic Pro x is the best, but isn’t it something like £200? What’s the reason for this?

I have a Mac book air and have looked into it however I just don’t understand why it’s so expensive

Cubase, Appleton (?) and Audacity are the industry standards.

I use Ableton

All DAWs are different but I suggest using Fruity Loops to start. it's simple.
