Blind People

How do people see blind people? (No pun intended). I am talking about in general.

Obviously being blind would be tough for anyone but for instance could you go out with a blind person? And what sort of jobs would blind people be good at?

I just had this talk with my girlfriend and i said to her: "Imagine if i was blind due to an illness, could you still be there to support me". She said yes and that it wouldn't change things but in reality it would. I am not going blind, don't worry, but with my recent eye problems it has passed my mind.

I know a blind web developer, young, and he can code HTML better than some of the people who have been doing it years. He is also learning .NET.

As for computing I think blind people could program UNIX Command Line software as its just text.

An umpire?
Come on guys I am being serious here.

There are alot of jobs, such as a graphic designer, that blind people cannot do.

There are a small minority of jobs that a blind person could not do. However, it's entirely ignorant to think there's a job that is "best" for blind people much as it would be to think there's all "able" people are suited to a particular job.

River85 makes a good point. I'm partially sighted and do know loads of people who are in the same situation. Quite a few of us appear to be good at computers/maths.
Why the need to dicuss what blind people can and cannot do ?

Can you not find anything more intresting to talk about ?

Because I recently had issues and problems with my eyes that had me raising the question and I am writing articles on how blind people work and live day by day.

I would, in the future, like to develop applications for blind people that help them use computers.

Mikey cannot eat peanut butter properly.

But, seriously, what's the point of this thread? Like other people said, different jobs suit different people, no matter if they're blind. Except blind people probably would br crap commentators

Yeah, my dad used to be rather heavily involved in art before he became blind, which he can't now, but he's been doing contract work for the BBC and is starting a local publication with a friend. I don't think that being blind necessarily restricts you socially or in most work where safety doesn't become a limiting factor. Most professional jobs, retail jobs and managerial roles are accessible to the blind with some accommodations (which are probably required by law under the DDA).

Now that is the type of reply I am looking for.

To everyone else, this thread is not stupid, its an honest question.

Well, then you should seek help from an optician. You cannot simply pigoen-hole, blind people in terms of what they can, or cannot do. They are indviduals.
I just feel sorry for them when i see one about, and feel grateful for what i have, as for jobs? dont know, most of them are stuck at home with thier dog, theres not much they can do unfortunatly

Who said I was pigoen holing? I was asking an honest question. It's obvious blind people struggle in life and some jobs are not possible. Stop throwing the possibility of discrimination at me. If you honestly can't see an honest question don't reply to my thread and PM me instead.

As for my personal health, yeah I have seen eye doctors and my eye health is fine.

I'm legally blind and wear quite thick glasses because my eyesight is very poor. It hasn't really stopped me doing anything I wanted to like getting into Cambridge and hopefully getting a really good job some day. The only main thing that I cannot do is drive, but hey!

The one thing that does upset me is that some people can be very nasty about my glasses and don't seem to undertsnad how unbelievably uncomfortable and painful contact lenses can be. They'd be less hostile about my appearance if I was *actually* blind and didn't wear glasses, which is laughable really.

I really don't know why people are dissing this thread so much. It's less stupid than a lot of the stuff on here, and of course not all blind people are the same but that wasn't what the OP was getting at - he was just asking if being blind limits one's career opportunities that much.

I don't know much about the blind to be honest, so I can't really answer the question. Just thought I'd defend the thread a bit ...

A lot of stupid answers in this thread i must say. Jobs that they can do - any that don't require sight. How do i see them? It's impressive how they can do what they do without being able to see, i was once puzzled by a blind guy on a bus, he pushed the stop button, got off and started walking on his own.

Stop buttons have braille on them but I know what you mean. I seen a guy sit down in a chair and he didn't even check to see if someone was sitting there. All he had was a dog and no cane.

I think there are some cases of blindness where the person cannot see but the brain can still tell the person where there are objects and stuff. Its as if the brain knows nobody is sitting in the chair but the person can't see it.
piano tuners are nearly always blind -
i know a LOT of piano tuners and 5/6 are blind
