i chose to take philosophy, and before my course had officially started i was extremely excited to dive in and begin learning. it’s now my third week into my course and i’m feeling completely lost. there are parts of my degree that i do enjoy, but i feel like i’m not smart enough for it? sometimes i feel really lost within my lectures, and when seminars come around i don’t speak because i don’t know what to say. or i fear i’ll say the wrong thing. i’ve always been an incredibly shy person, so it’s been hard for me to cope with my classes since they’re so large. everyone on my course already has their own friends, and no one really talks to me. it’s really hard to cope because whenever i feel lost or am confused i don’t have anyone to turn to. i don’t understand how to write essays and i feel like i’m the only one who is lost. i don’t know if choosing philosophy was the right thing to do, and now i’m lost on what i should do. i struggle a lot with the readings and when we have to reflect on them and analyse it i just don’t know what to do. at this point i’m questioning why i’m even here. everyone is doing so well and i’m the only one struggling. i don’t know what to do. i know university is hard but i’m feeling like i really don’t belong here. i feel like crying. i hate that i don’t feel intelligent and being here is completely destroying my confidence. i don’t know whether i should just drop out or not because it’s so early into the year and we still haven’t done a lot.

Try this to give you some pointers. Cheer up, philosophy is a hard subject, but if it isn’t what you thought it would be then think if you want to continue. If it is just grasping techniques then try to get your confidence back up.

Can you provide an example - so we can better understand your difficulty?

What are you studying now. Who are you reading about?

What's an existential crisis?
