Grad entry Dentistry

Hiya, currently in the second year of my Biomedical Sciences degree. I really want to study Dentistry after I graduate. The only problem is that I got CCD for my a levels in Bio, Chen and Maths. What universities can I apply to for Dentistry that will not look at my A level grades, considering that I achieve a 2.1 or a first in my biomed degree? Thank you!!

Hi! Would you be looking at applying to graduate entry only or considering doing another undergrad?

With CCD you will not be able to apply to any dental university in the UK; Graduate or Undergraduate; seek an alternative career path.

Dental school is extremely academically demanding and shares many modules with medicine; dental students take the same classes and exams as the medics (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, cardiovascular systems, nephrology, gastroenterology, neurobiology, etc) before they start specialising in dentistry. If you lack the academic ability, dental school is simply not for you - it's a full time degree that requires you to fully and unreservedly dedicate 5 years of your life to the course and you will have little time for anything else - every year a handful of first & second year students don't pass their exams and are removed from the course - these are students that managed to get AAA-A*AA without resits.

It also worth noting that dental school is one of the most competitive courses to get onto - some would say even more so than medicine. Applicants that have AAA grades at A-Level, plenty of experience, an excellent personal statement, evidence of volunteering, still get rejected - that's not to say they aren't cut out for dentistry, but because there are simply very little places available in the UK.

I don’t know much about the undergrad entry route but for grad I know UCLan require minimum CCC at a level. I thought KCL and Aberdeen didn’t look at your A levels if you had a 2:1 degree or above? But I haven’t applied to these uni’s and I know MSmith90 has said this isn’t the case so I could well be wrong. Maybe you’re best giving them a call? Sorry that’s not much help!
Best of luck with whatever you decide though!
