I got a 9 last year in German. I just made a list of phrases to use and made sure to put most of them in. These were:
Wenn ich.... verb, verb...
Als ich... verb, verb... (past)
Um... zu... + infinitive
Ich glaube, dass... / Ich denke, dass...
Ich möchte + infinitive... / ich würde gern + infinitive
Ich interessiere mich für... (good old reflexive)
And last but not least, modal verbs:
Ich muss... / ich musste...
Ich kann...

Non phrases:
Other things were:
time phrases (manchmal, normalerweise).
The 3 different forms of because (da, denn, weil).
Connectives which aren't only und (aber, jedoch, etc.)
Different past tenses: e.g. habe gespielt, ich spielte *Use the first one more, as it's more typical german*
A past tense with ich bin (e.g. ich bin gegangen).
Dative case. (e.g. Ich wohne im einen kleinen Dorf).
Adjectives, with correct endings.
ALL TENSES.
I can't remember what else- I spent hours perfecting a list, which I then lost the day after the exam...

Don't use common boring phrases like außerdem or meiner meinung nach all the time, you can try "was mich angeht" or "was mich betrifft" instead. Try and learn some more "niche" verbs and include them in your writing. Have a look at german verb lists or vocab lists, I’d recommend the TES website, or links posted by other users on here also be very confident in your use of cases and genders, German has 4 cases and 3 genders (eww), so make sure you know that mit uses the dative case etc.
