No, Britain has not had a proper standing military force for civil use since Oliver Cromwell, and while I can see the benefits, I would prefer the Police Force to be more efficient than introducing another bunch of "crimefighting" morons.
It would be a damning indictment of the state of society and communities, but for some areas, I can see why people may call for it. The thing is, it would need to be part of a wider political and social solution.

Remember Northern Ireland anyone? Sent in the army there in 1969 to stop people killing each other but as there was no political solution, the army became part of the problem.

I can't think of any reasons why it would be a bad thing, but i cant necessarily think of any good aspects of it either :s-smilie:
Apart from the fact there would be more authority-figures out and about, which might discourage crime etc. but the same could be said for just having more police officers

It would definitely work over here. 1st, we have too many small scale police forces that could be subsumed into a Gendarmerie in a setup reminiscent of the RCMP in Canada ( we Brits set it up after all). 2nd, the Met is too overloaded with extra-territorial responsibilities and also too many agencies which are scattered in terms of responsibilities in the UK. Many of these could be dealt with by a Military Police that would be a relief for the usual constabularies. 3rd, it would be a source of pride and a fount to bring in well honed soldiers or military personal who could transfer their skills and discipline into the civvy world which seems to be oblivious sometimes of the outside world. We should have one most definitely.
