20cm3 of butane is burned in 150 cm3 of oxygen.

C4H10(g)+ 6O2(g) = 4CO2(g) + 5H2O(g)

what is the total volume of gas present after complete combustion of butane?

A- 80cm3
B- 100cm3
C- 180cm3
D- 210cm3

if someone helped i’d really appreciate it!!

I’d say it’s D - there’s 30 cm^3 of oxygen left and you made 180cm^3 of gaseous products, which totals to 210.

Hey (not the original poster) but would you be willing to expand on the maths, I'm doing higher chem this year and got an answer that is not even one of the options. Thanks in advance x

Butane is the limiting reagent since you only need 120cm^3 of oxygen (20cm^3 * 6) but you have 150. Therefore, 30cm^3 of oxygen is left over. Since butane is the limiter you then times the number of moles you have on the right side. In this case, you have 180cm^3 (20 * 9) of gas formed plus the remaining 30, thus giving you 210.
