how many long quotes in a essay

how many 'long' quotes (the type you have to indent) should you use in a 1300 word essay? I can't avoid not using any as they are important quotes.

Thank you x

Quotes really ought to be used like saffron: sparingly. They illustrate and amplify your argument. 1300 words is very little, and large indented texts make forming a sustained, logical argument difficult.

As to the exact number of words, it's impossible to be prescriptive without knowing the question, topic, level of answer required etc.
