I'm looking for a firewall for my new laptop (Vista) and I don't want to use Norton. I have AVG installed as virus protection but no fire wall. I don't mind paying, but free ones are nicer to my bank account!

Thanks

just use the one that comes with windows, or if you have a router you dont need to use a software firewall at all

Well Vista has Windows Defender, but you are better off with something else.

ZoneAlarm is free and good http://www.zonealarm.com/store/conte...e_firewall.jsp

If you choose to use it, I might have a serial for it or something somewhere, so PM if you need it and i'll have a look.

hardware firewall is still the best
Of course, but nasties can still leak through easily enough.

Oh and stay away from Kaspersky IMO - its UI is horrible and it's really annoying :p:

Go for F Secure if you do want to pay, same engine but 100 times less intrusive.

I don't disagree! I think both is best!

But if she doesn't have a hardware one then software is it really Considering not wanting to pay for hardware. And if it's at uni it depends on their network, though I guess they are firewalled.

I would recommend Comodo, I have used every free firewall under the sun and this one has been the best
