Gap year Physics ideas

I'm a student currently in year 13 who is thinking about taking a gap year to apply to study Physics at Oxford, which I don't currently have the grades for. My biggest reservation about this is I don't want to waste that year. I was thinking about doing the 'Year in Industry' program from EDT but I don't know what kind of Physics related placements there are. If anyone has gone through that program or has taken a year out before studying physics please let me know what you did during that year.

TLDR; Need some ideas for a gap year before physics degree.
