Thinking about messaging someone online to meet up. Is it ever a good idea?

I've been looking at a few forums for people in my local area who want to meet up with others, usually its in a sexual context but sometimes its just for socialising.

There's a poster near me who is asking to meet up with people locally for this, and I've been feeling particularly isolated in my social circle and want to try something new/risky. However, I'm also sceptical about this.

Does anyone know how these things are meant to work out? I have no idea what to do other than I want to take a risk and not be boring for once.

Make sure that other people know you are going to meet someone and arrange to let them know you are ok.
Meet in a public place and dont go anywhere else with them until you are totally at ease with them.

They can be windups with some, I have had a few that did not show up after arranging to meet.
Also could be a dodgy person wanting to meet then assault you, that's why need to be careful and meet in public place and let a friend know... even as far as having a friend go with you then leave when you are comfortable.
