It's not correct to say that "for any generic problem like this you must shade in the region outside the circles if we have U".

The reason we have to shade in the outside of the circles is because AA' contains these outside regions, therefore they must be involved when considering ABA' \cup B. Hence why I simply told you to fully shade in the regions where we have at least one stroke going through, and obviously this includes the outside of the circles.

If we had ABA \cup B, then of course we don't shade in the outside just because we have U in here. You can follow the method I have provided to deduce what this region is (if you dont already know)

if i’m being honest, shading the religion that we don’t have to shade in is making it more difficult for me.

i know so i shaded B when it said A’ U B. And what???? and shade everything else?

Sorry i was in the classroom! Shade B or everything not in A - look at the resource the bear has linked.

Yes I would not follow RDKGames advice here.

No it's not quite there still.

PLEASE do not do this - the exam board does not want this as I said above.

Can you check the question please?
is it
5x + 2y = 11
4x - 3y = 18

yes it is

8 - - 15 = 23

oh so - - in subtraction means plus

Please stop spamming the same question over multiple threads. :grr:

Yes, subtracting a negative number means +.

it was literally just two threads only and she was online so i asked her as well

wait. so +8y - - 15? you have to add? but there’s a positive in front of the 8

wait. so +8y - - 15? you have to add? but there’s a positive in front of the 8

when there are two negative, you add so 8y - (-15) = 8y + 15
Remember these:
+ + = add
+ - = substract
- + = substract
- - = add
so 18 + (-15) = 18 - 15 as it is + -
18 - (+15 ) = 18 - 15 as it is - +
18 - (-15) = 18 + 15 as it is - -
18 + (+15) = 18 + 15

I don't understand what you're answering. What is the value of y? Because in the example 20 - 23y = 46 is y = -1 in this case?

i really dunno that’s why i’m asking for help

If you are trying to find the value of y. Subtract or add both sides to remove the values and then divide the value tied with the y.

For example in this questions we have:
-17 + 3/4y = 7 what is the value of y?
Well we want y on it's own so lets add 17 both sides to get:
(+17) 3/4y = 7 + 17
Now lets divide by 3/4 to get rid of the 3/4 tied to the y.
(÷3/4) y = 24 ÷ 3/4
y = 32

If you are doing GCSE rn, you should really be understanding all this by now. I recommend you to ask help from a teacher and there are many videos that help with simultaneous equations and basic algebra calculations.

Sorry I was out doing some shopping for a neighbour whose husband died last week :frown:

If you subtract you should have 23y = - 46 so y = -2

Hang in there, you can do it
