im trying to apply to clintons online and it says 'job reference'
what is that

A "statement", usually from a former employer, about your personal qualities/competence etc.

If you haven't had a job before then you may be able to use other people for references such as teachers/academics and maybe community figures.

I suspect it's actually an identifying code for the job (eg 1234ABC) rather than asking you for a written reference from your last employment. When the jobs are advertised on the site they have a reference code next to the job title.

I just checked clintons online and all the jobs have reference numbers, ie part-time sales assistant in Brecon - Ref: 10.03.DRDh
