Hey guys Welcome to my GYG where I will (hopefully) be preparing well for my GCSEs. I want to try and do this one properly (unlike last year), but we'll see how that turns out .

About me
Spoiler:
Show
Well there isn't exactly much to say here <img src="https://static.thestudentroom.co.uk/5da585ec1f0e7/forum/images/smilies/tongue.png" data-sceditor-emoticon="" alt="" title=""> My 'hobbies' (I use the term loosely) include watching youtube, listening to music, and watching youtube. I also run a meme page on instagram lmao.

What do I want to do in life?
Spoiler:
Show

Don't really know to be honest. I would like to go into a field of computer science, no idea what though lmao. Guess we'll see how that turns out.

A-Levels

So, I've pretty much decided that I want to do maths, further maths, computer science and physics. I'm not entirely sure about further maths and physics, but heyy. I find them both interesting, but I'll probably struggle a lot with them relative to my other subjects, but again, I'll guess we'll see how that turns out later.
I've already applied for 2 sixth forms. Though I'm not 100% certain on which I want to go to, at the moment I'm pretty set on one.

What subjects do I do / what are my predictions?
Spoiler:
Show

AQA English Language - 8
AQA English Litertaure (J&H, AIC & Macbeth) - 7
AQA Maths - 9
AQA Further Maths
Edexcel Biology - 8
Edexcel Chemistry - 9
Edexcel Physics - 9
AQA French - 7
AQA Computer Science - 8
Eduqas Design Technology - 7
These predictions are based off of my year 10 mocks though, so take from that what you will

English Lang - 8
English Lit - 7
Maths - 9
Biology - 8
Chemistry - 9
Physics - 9
French - 6
Computer Science - No idea
DT - 7

What grades do I want to get?
Spoiler:
Show

I would like to get:
9's in maths, biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science
An 8 in DT
7's in english lit + lang and French
No idea about further maths though

This is gonna be pretty difficult, but hey I'll try (well, that's the plan anyways)

I have my first set of year 11 mocks straight after half term - there's nothing quite like exams to get you in the mood for going back to school amirite? No? I've already done my english language (paper 2) one though (which went pretty horribly, but we can ignore that for now). I don't really want to see what I got in it -nervous laughter- .
I'll try and keep you updated on what I'm doing over half term, and how they go

Thanks for reading

Over half term I plan on doing a corbett maths 5-a-day everyday, and keep up my duolingo streak (it's on 20 at the moment and I don't want to lose that ), along with other bits of revision.
Surprisingly, I don't actually have any homework, but I do need to revise for my mocks

26/10/19

Didn't really do much today (whoops). I did my duolingo (albeit only 2 lessons, but thats 2 more than none right?) and my 5-a-day though. Also, I put a summary of (nearly) all of physics topic 4 (waves) onto a powerpoint slide.

Today I:

  • Did 2 lessons on duolingo
  • Did a corbett maths 5-a-day
  • Wrote some brief notes on calorimetry, mitosis and growth
  • Started making a powerpoint slide with Jekyll & Hyde quotes but gave up after writing like 3 because I got bored aha oops

Didn't exactly do much but heyyy like I said yesterday - it's better than nothing, right? right?

Didn't really feel motivated to do much today, but then apparently I also decide to start worrying about the mocks?? (Probably should have done more revision if I was worrying, but no, apparently I didn't)

Today I:
  • Did 2 lessons on duolingo
  • Did my further maths homework I forgot about aha
  • Did a corbett maths 5-a-day
  • Started making some notes of chemistry topic 4 - extracting metals and equilibria (which I decided to start doing at 9pm because why not?) I got this far through the topic (still another page of it I need to do as well )

29/10/19 (totally not posting this at midnight)

I didn't really do much today but heyyyy (I'm noticing a recurring theme with these posts)

Today I:
  • Did 2 lessons on Duolingo
  • Did a corbett maths 5-a-day
  • Finished off the notes for chemistry topic 4 - extracting metals and equilibria
  • Answered some questions on that topic
  • Finished off the Jekyll and Hyde quotes on "inhuman characteristics" (so basically just Hyde)
  • Started making some notes on lenses for physics

I can't believe that it's going to be Halloween tomorrow - it's gone so fast
(I also can't believe that I'm actually remembering to post on here lmao)

Today I:
  • Did 2 lessons on Duolingo
  • Did a corbett maths 5-a-day
  • Watched freescienelessons videos on momentum and Newton's third law
  • Read through some notes I made for DT at the end of year 10
  • Started making some notes for DT on paper and boards but gave up after 10 minutes because I got bored (no pun intended)
  • Copied the quotes I did for Hyde onto flashcards

My DT mock today was a joke ngl. It was the same paper as we did for our year 10 mocks. It's meant to be a 2 hour exam - I had 50 minutes left after finishing and checking through my questions, and I went through the paper slowly. Sat there for 40 mins with my head on the table so that was fun.

My maths exam went alright (I think?) aha. There were 2 questions in particular that I struggled to answer, but it was just me being stupid, and I answered them in the end. I answered all of the questions - although theres a few I know I messed up. Guess I'll have to wait until I get the paper back to see all of the stupid mistakes I made

Tomorrow I have my english lit exam :nope:
I'm really not prepared for it - Jekyll and Hyde I'm fairly confident with, however I have no clue for Macbeth. Can't wait for tomorrow morning

I've forgotten to post on here with all my mocks going on at the moment aha but here's a bit of an update.

I've only got three more exams to go (:woo:) - French writing, physics and computer science.

I think (hope?) my maths exams went quite well (well, I messed up paper 1 a bit but we'll ignore that). Most of my other subjects so far have been alright - don't think I've done that well in them, but I don't feel like I've messed them up completely. But you know, I may or may not have completely ****ed up my french reading and listening because I had no clue whatsoever, and literally started guessing random letters. And it's the higher paper as well, so I probably got a U in it So that's fun I suppose.

The only result I've gotten back so far is english language. I just got an 8 (somehow). If I had gotten one mark lower, it would have been a 7, but I'm really happy with that . I thought I had completely ****ed up question 5 because I only spent 20 minutes on it, but somehow ended up getting 30/40 on it lmaoo

I have my French writing exam tomorrow and am slightly freaking out. I literally can barely form a sentence without having to search up a word... I also need to do well in this exam, because I did crap in the other 2, and so I need to use this to bring up my overall grade slightly . I got a 6 at the end of year 10, but I don't even think I'm going to end up passing this time How have I gotten worse at French since year 10??

In better news, we got our first 2 maths papers back and I'm realllyyyy happy with how they went

Spoiler:
Show
On paper 1 I got 77/80 and in paper 2 I got 80/80 I genuinely was not expecting that - really pleased with it

skjskjs I don't want to do French tomorrow - I really don't want to fail French, but I probably already have, as I've almost certainly failed the listening and the reading already. Doesn't help that I'm doing higher, and so cannot get below a 4 Wish me luck for tomorrow I suppose aha

French wasn't that great. It was definitely better than the listening and reading, but it was still pretty ****ing terrible  Not looking forward to getting my French results back

I have my physics mock tomorrow, so I'm gonna try and do some revision tonight, and at school tomorrow.

I also got my maths paper 3 back today and I got 80/80 on that one as well Really pleased with that - overall I got 237/240

Hi everyone I’ve finished my GCSEs but here is some advice anyways:

Don’t worry I was scared when I was doing my GCSE’s (I’m in year 12 now )
My grades
2 9’s
3 8’s
6 7’s

This is how I revised:

Science
I used a technique called blurting or active recall this is when you open a page of a book you want to revise (e.g. cell division) and your read it and actually try to understand what you are reading. Then close the book and on a blank sheet on paper write down everything you can remember (it doesn’t matter if you have missed anything out)
Then when you have written down EVERYTHING you can remember, open your textbook and in a different colour pen write down everything you have missed out. When you finish your page you will be able to see everything that you are confused about or don’t remember and you will focus on those more the next time you blurt. (However also make sure to read over your blurting sheets regularly maybe once every few weeks for a single page) so That you don’t forget the things you could remember the first time you blurted. This is SO helpful. Also make sure you do practice questions and tests and things like that. When you do a question and you get it wrong check the mark scheme and use the mark scheme answers into your notes as they are likely to repeat the type of questions that will come up in your GCSEs.
Also use the internet for example free science lessons, Seneca, bbc bite size and primrose kitten.

English lit
Make sure you remember all of your quotes you could use flash cards to help you with this. Also use me bruff and mr salles they are both you tubers . Also what I did was at around December and January I would take some essays for my teacher to mark for example poetry comparisons and jekyll and Hyde blah blah so that if the essays you prepared comes up in the real exam you will have lots of essays ready (don’t learn them word by word just the explanations and context and things like that are really important or get you high marks) I would take these essays to my teacher until I had nothing else to improve on. I ended up writing a essay for the character of Hyde from J&H and I got a grade 9 and he actually came up in the real exam!

English language:

Learn structures and timings for each questions sorry I can’t actually remember any of them because it was such a long time ago but I’m sure your teacher would have given you some. Also make sure to use high level vocab (form your teachers or the thesaurus ) which also gives you really high marks for example plethora and cornucopia both meant a lot of things and I also used to use those

Maths
Use YouTube channels and make sure you do lots of practise questions there is no point In making notes for maths maybe just make flash cards for any equations you need to know and the ones you won’t be given in the real exam. Also use maths genie maths watch and other websites like that They are soooo helpful

Heavy content subjects eg essay based subjects like history psychology etc

Do blurting for these harder topics and make sure to do essay plans as well also take days for your teachers to mark and keep annoying them and making them give you feedback on them until you get full marks .

Bye and good luck with your mocks
