GYG: Busiest Year of My Life

Hey, I am trying to decide my A levels and I don't know what to pick, I am confused between

Bio
Chem
Maths
Physics
Psychology
Economics/Business

How do you decide between them, I don't know my passion I like different things, Like social science a bit more but I have always been drawed towards science, I work for science but for social science it just comes to me, but chemistry although hard has just made me tick, I don't know what to choose. I am scared I am going to make the wrong decision

There is no wrong decision if you enjoy all of your subjects imo.
Maths seems like it's in everything you want to study, so that's a solid start that will build the foundations of any science-based university course you want to apply to. Maybe try reading some books outside of each subject and find out which one excites you the most.

And remember, even if you end up not taking a subject you really enjoy, you can always still do your own independent research and reading outside of A Levels. An EPQ is a good way of getting a qualification in a subject of your choosing. My school didn't offer Philosophy unless I took RE so I'm currently doing an EPQ dissertation about the overlap and symbiotic relationship between Physics and Philosophy because I find it interesting.

Also don't worry about things being set in stone. You can always take an A Level for the start of Year 12 and if you don't particularly enjoy it, then you can drop it n swap it for another.

To be honest I can't read out side my subject, I find reading boring (No offence to reading lovers) , I mean I can read articles here and there about social sciences.but I don't know what is meaningful, I just don't want to end up choosing the wrong A levels now and then not doing well, I mean i can read about psychology and business but not so much, science I like learning it, I don't know how to decide to be honest, I haven't read that much ,,, UIghh lool I hate my anxiety

I'm new to this so ummm... How do I tag you?

I've put my uni subject choices in the intro and on a separate message for offers haha. But I want to take Natural Sciences, I just love all my subjects at the moment that I can't begin to narrow them down yet! I'm thinking I might specialise in some form of Physics or Materials Science though, haven't quite decided.

Damn that’s a varied of courses how are you gonna put in one ps. Aww that’s good you know what you wanna take but hopefully you’ll find out which course you wanna do. Which uni are you hoping to go for in the end goal?

I know what you mean about finding reading boring. I love all my subjects but I just get distracted so easily whenever I get the chance for some peaceful reading with a cup of tea (hence why one of my goals for this year is to read more haha).

Maybe if you don't like reading so much, you could search for some podcasts, maybe some YouTube channels (I recommend Steve Mould, his content is really good and uses terminology you need for GCSE and A Levels very well) so you're watching something and not getting bored to death by processing all those words?

When do you have to decide your options by? What's your school's policy on taking more than 3 A Levels and do you have a careers advisor or someone you can talk to at school about choosing options?

Well, I just crammed a whole load of stuff into my personal statement with just one or two lines about extracurricular haha. (I submitted UCAS earlier this month to hit the Oxbridge 15th October deadline.)

The end goal is Cambridge for me. Love the city, love the subsidised prices of food and accommodation (gotta be saving with that student life) and most importantly, I absolutely love the modules and broadness of the course I want to take. It's a lot of work but I really want to get there!

I also love all my other courses. I wanted Materials and Physics to be a big part of all of them (apart from Exeter, but I slipped in International Study to make it interesting and skip out the Year 3 modules I wasn't so keen on haha) and I'd be happy going to any one of my other courses that I've applied for.

I'll keep the tagging thing in mind. Most people do that stuff in spoiler paragraphs right?

As soon as possible as I am currently in year 12 so this week I think, my school is against 3 a levels but I have options to do it privately, Maybe but I don't think they would be very accomidating, btw I first sought advice from someone and they said do biology, chemistry and psyhcology , I did enjoy chemistry and psychology but then had what if thoughts for engineering and convienced myself I hated biology but then does that mean I am convining myself to like my sciences, I don't know, I just hope this all works out.

What should I do? Like what are the next steps to make it better for me?

My tips for starting Year 12 FM would be:
- Have extremely good notes. Cannot stress enough how bad it was when I was revising for End of Y12 exams and I couldn't make sense of most of my notes.
- A LOT of practice. Especially if you're doing Mechanics, it's just all about repeating a certain technique until you're confident in applying it. I just went through every single question in my textbooks (even the easy ones for the understanding and the super hard ones that took me days and days of crying until I got it - best feeling in the world).
- Throughout the year, just do lil recaps of everything you've done. It makes revision a lot easier when you need to do an exam.
- If your school has a Maths Workshop or something similar, I suggest using it. If you don't understand something, go to a teacher straight away because otherwise that builds up and you got a lotta content ahead of you to learn!
- STEP and MAT papers. Even if you're not planning on applying for Maths at University, I've been attending a weekly STEP club and working on STEP 1 papers. At first I was completely demoralised but after a year of working at it, my maths and problem solving skills have come on SO MUCH! I really recommend joining anything like this if your school runs it. If not, maybe try this in your own time - TSR is always on hand to help if you're stuck!

I'll be mostly using this GYG as a Further Maths revision/crying sesh so stay tuned and I'll let you know what else I come up with!
