Will a phone on Orange in Turkey be able to receive texts from a phone on T-Mobile in the UK ?

It depends, if your phone is tri-( or quad) band then it will be fine and to be honest almost all newish phones are! But if you've got an old brick of a phone then it might be worth checking to see if it is tri-band

You only need a dual-band phone to work in Turkey -- so pretty much any phone purchased from here will work there.

Uh, no - it's free to receive texts abroad (at least, I've never seen it not be). It's just expensive to make or receive calls, or send texts.

I've been charged for receiving them abroad. I can't remember the network I was on, butit'sdefinitely happened.

Or, more likely, you don't know anything about my experiences, so you should just shut up. I know I have been charged to recieve text messages, so forgive me for not believing some idiot on the internet who tells me otherwise.
