my coursework for english requires i find critical opinions and cite them. but this one i want to use is "Both Gatsby and Myrtle are victims and are socially inferior to Nick, Daisy and Tom Buchanan, and Jordan Baker. Tom calls Gatsby "Mr. Nobody from Nowhere" (a social as well as professional, or business, epithet), and this identification, or lack of it, is applicable to Myrtle." in the original text victims has a footnote which includes two different people. i found those articles myself. but if i include the above quote do i also have to footnote the word victims and relay it back to the people the person got it from. Or do i just not include the footnote of the above quotes article and list the two papers it was gotten from in my biblography, as i have actually gone and found them and read them as part of wider reading. I'm sorry if this is confusing, its just that we can't ask the teacher for help and no one else has a clue either.

I'm studying English at degree and referencing is the bane of my life, but I hope I can be of some help.

What you're saying is that you have found a critical opinion from your wider reading, which is great. You shouldn't have to reference the term victims in this as it's a separate quote from a separate critic - if you were to quote the 'victims' directly from the text then yes, you would.

Do you have a word limit for this essay? I would say the quote you want to include is a little long. Perhaps shorten it down to: "Both Gatsby and Myrtle are victims and are socially inferior to Nick, Daisy and Tom Buchanan, and Jordan Baker." That way you can then mold the quote around what you want to argue, rather than letting the critics opinion dictate where you go with your essay.

Hope this is helpful!

Thank you this is very helpful. I do have a word limit which is 3000 words and thank you so much for suggesting how to shorten it. I have to do something similar in classic civillisations and shorten what is said, which is something i find really hard. This is a great help!!
