My brother informed me today that somebody at his school has had an offer to either Oxford or Cambridge (I'm not 100% sure which but I belive it may have been Oxford) has got an offer for UUU.

Surely this cannot be right? I've heard of EEE before, but UUU??? Why would they offer such grades when the norm is AAA?

I assume, else it's just an unconditional offer.

I thought UUU was a fail. Maybe they've achieved enough UMS points already to get EEE with grades of UUU.

UUU?

Sounds like a load of tosh to me. They would just make it unconditional if they didn't want the applicant to pass any exams for his year of entry.

It was probably that he needed UUU in his A2s as he already had the UMS to achieve his offer.

One of my friends for example only needed CCC and nothing in maths to achieve his offer, and even if he'd failed one he'd have still met his AAA....

Even if you get 100% UMS in all AS exams, you'd still need to pass A2 exams with a reasonable grade to get A's and B's.

I've heard of this happening.

I believe it was my mother's ex-boyfriend's dog's breeder's first husband's stepson.

Any course. Some colleges give out EE offers to some candidates - Christ's being one of them.

Edit: Bear in mind that the candidate isnt predicted EEE, they will be predicted A's. Cambridge just give them the low offer as they really like them.

Ok so people don't believe me but I assure you that is what my brother told me. Now I don't belive he would lie and doubt that he would have got confused as a girl at my school which is the sister school to my brother's was offered low entry grades to Oxford but not quite UUU.

Not which course, but which college.

Christ's at Cam for one offer EE, and sometimes with the stipulation that they sit some AEAs.

I think.

The point is that a U isn't even a grade at all, so it would seem rather nonsensical. Why not just unconditional?

Perhaps there are extenuating circumstances.

Or an EE offer has been made to take the pressure off as explained by Nina above.

Edit, that was referring to the other case you mention, the UUU is just a but ridiculous - its just unconditional.
