While looking through the new 2009 syllabus for chemistry I came across a bizarre addition they embedded in the syllabus: TOK!

Example of things they would like students to consider:

"Are oxidation numbers real?"
"Given that protons, neutrons and electrons cannot be observed directly, do we believe in their existence?"
"In drawing an image of an atom, we have an image of an invisible world, which ways of knowing allow us to access the invisible world?"
"The predictive power of Mendeleev's periodic table could be mentioned. Here is an example of a scientist as a "risk taker"".

Ah man, the first question got me bursting into laughter.

Erhm, oxidation numbers are both complex and real, as R is a subset of C

Seriously this is a bit messed up...

(that there is chemistry in the TOK course makes sense, but not the other way around)

lol, sounds like your chemistry teacher wasn't too good if he didn't include some TOK aspects throughout the course. After all, it is in the new syllabus, your teacher should know it.

But yeah, don't think they would ask about what you wrote, but about more general social/ethical issues, such as effect of acid rain on the environment, etc.

I actually told her the other day and she was like, "Ew. I know. Ew. If anyone asks, we constantly talk about it. Ew."
