There's an article with a map that I want to reference.
The article doesn't analyse the image so when referencing would I need to insert the image into my essay or can I just say fig 1 in (blah blah) shows that...

It really depends on how much you want your reader to get from the image. If its a simple "cool map in paper [XX] shows thing y" then just reference the source. However, if it makes your work "better" by showing the image and explaining key features you want you audience to understand, then yes, include it with an "Image reproduced from [XX]" in the caption and put [XX] in the Biblio.
