Confusion with independent variable and dependant variable

If the question says run a regression of hourly earnings on age which is the independent and which is the dependant.

It's like saying run a regression of Y on X.

And the norm is that X is the independent variable, and Y is the dependent one.
Age is the independent variable and hourly earnings are the dependant variable. The way I think about this is that hourly earnings might possibly depend on your age, but your age isn't going to change as a result of a change in your earnings.

As you do Econ - note min hourly rate is based on age band (<18, 18-20, 21-24, 25+). So one's hourly pay may be influenced by their age. But one's hourly pay doesn't influence their age; that depends on DOB.
