So son is in year 2 social work and has just failed his ready for placement presentation for the second time. He has had great feedback from his tutor who said he would pass, but has not. He has been asked to finish this term and take some time off after Xmas when everyone goes on placement. Then to retake presentation next November to return to University for terms 2&3 next year for placement. How does this affect the student finance? Is he able to get student finance for only terms 2&3 next year if he has done term 1 this year? Will he have to pay back term 1 from this year? I'm wondering if he would be better to just leave now and repeat the whole of year 2, but what will he have to pay back what he has received? It has gone on his rent this term. We're very worried and not sure what to do for the best.

Hi there,

Every student is entitled to the duration of their course plus one additional year. If he is going to be doing terms 2 and 3 next year he would state the specific term dates on his application. He will still be eligible to receive funding, is he going to be withdrawing from his course or just suspending his studies?

Thanks, Amy
