How does ATP release energy? I know it has something to do with the Phosphate groups but my textbook doesn't make sense and the teacher just skipped over it.

Breaking bonds requires energy so how is energy released when the phosphate group is broken?

ATP is released during respiration and its composed of adenosine attached to three phosphate groups. When cells need to use energy, ATP is broken down into ADP and phosphate.

The bonds between the phosphates store energy. When the bonds are broken, that energy is released.

Hydrolysis. To break ATP to ADP, a water molecule is involved to break the one phosphate bond what releases energy:

ATP + H2O <-> ADP + P + Energy
