Hi everyone, I need your help. I’m currently studying BTEC extended diploma in applied science. To give you some background, I am in my final year of college. I have already achieved D*D in my first year and I’m predicted D*D*D in my second year. I also have a D in As psychology and an E in As biology.

I am really struggling to pick my university options, this is because I do not want to do anything to do with biology or chemistry, the rest of the students in my course are all doing medicine related things, pharmacy and physiotherapy etc. I don’t want to do that. I am really interested in business, project management and engineering, I wouldn’t mind going to uni to study either of those things or something else that is loosely related.

My problem is that all respected universities or from what Iv gathered anyway don’t accept Applied science for engineering or business etc. They want a related BTEC. Can anyone help and give me some advice, I’m panicking as it’s close to my college due date and I still haven’t made my choices. (My main objective is to do a degree apprenticeship but that is guaranteed.

Can anyone give me some advice, preferably from personal experience on what unis and what subjects to apply to?

Many thanks

For Engineering then they generally rtequire A level Maths. If its a passion then do the A level or see if they have foundation year.

Business courses tend to be non subject specific.

You arent telling us what you rate as the so called respected universities. I suspect you can get onto a business course with a non related BTEC you just have to do the searching as well as refining what you need. Normally science is considered a preferred area, even for business.

If we are talking about a degree apprenticeship then employers can choose and put down a requirement. I suggest you contact the employer direct and explain you have applied science plus the grades and are keen to apply. They will say yay or nay. You just have to put time in.

The deadline for applications is 15 Jan.

Business is very vague so either start looking through the range of degree courses (Pick a large uni and see what they offer) or try identifying your favoured job.

These books and links can get you started.

See if you can get any of these books at the careers library or they will have similar for you to read. Try and get ones aimed at your age group. If you cant find then just get second hand from Amazon.

As someone has already suggested, try foundation courses at unis
