I have done really bad in my first year getting a 3rd class.
I am intending to study hard next year and suppose i get a decent grade will that still mean i won't be able to do an intership? What about when applying for a masters will university ask for a first year results? Will predicted grade will be based on the first year result as well?

Thanks

Masters....no they won't know what you got in first year (and if you take a gap in between that's for def!)

Yes it will probs affect your predicted grades.

Yes you will probs still be able to do an internship as long as you work hard.

If it makes you feel any better....it could be worse....my flatmate just got kicked out of his uni for completely flunking first year.

Why? I failed my first year for a number of reasons, though I will admit laziness was a huge factor, and I was given the chance to retake the year. However, I do know people who have failed their first year twice and one even then went on to a different course and failed that too.

Some people would say that even failing once should show that university isn't for you but that's daft. Everyone makes mistakes and if you can learn from them, like I did, surely that shows something.

I guess that must depend on the course then, because everywhere to which I applied requested a transcript of my first and second year results, which as far as I'm aware, is completely standard.

My gawd - are they STILL at Uni or have they gone onto something else?

Just a curious question - I took 10 modules, but have passed 9 - would that class me as failing my first year or have I passed the first year regardless of one module? . . . Just wondering
Yeah i scraped a pass, its the first year who cares,

Are you retaking that module in the summer? At my uni I was told that you had to pass everything, to gain a certain amount of 'credit's, to be able to continue to the second year.

Nah, they have left now. Well I know the one that has failed a first year 3 times has definitely given up now but I'm not sure about the other. I know she's sticking around but she may just be working.

I retook it yesterday but i buggered it up again - hardly answering the paper, because I went blank. The module however is compulsory BUT I have no pre requisites to it (Psychology *shudders*). The majority of the other modules I have passed are B's and C's, 1 A and 1 D. Im majoring in Criminology and I got an overall grade of a B, my minor is Sociology and got an overall mark of a C.
Im just worrying that im going to have to retake the entire first year, but it seems an awful shame to do so with the marks I have already got - I worked my butt off, especially the module where I got an A in - never thought I would get a First and I got one, at the end of the first year. :frown:

All I know is that to retake an entire module is £325 which im going to work and save to be able to take it next year, semester 2.

My tutor is also on holiday and isnt back til start of August - so don't quite know what to do or who to talk to - who will understand my query.

I've done quite badly in my first year as well. Managed to come 61/64 on the results list! :s-smilie: Does your first year count at all? Mine doesn't and if yours doesn't, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I doubt your predicted grade for your overall degree will be based on your first year. I don't think universities look at your first year results when applying for a Masters (or at least that's the impression I've got from my tutors. They've pretty much drawn a line and said next year is a fresh start). Not sure about internships, but I'm sure everything else will be fine

where did you apply to?
I "scraped" a pass (some slight leeway).

I know the workload now, and I am confident that I will do better in second year when it counts.

I scraped first year.

Second year - my average was 2:1. But yes, it will affect your chances of getting an internship or even transferring (which is an absolute pain in the arse for me atm)

But do universities as for a full transcript of first year and second year results when applying for a masters?

I think they just care about what you graduate with tbh (a 2:1). I mean if you average a third in first year, but end up with a 2:1 then it will make no sense to turn you away. At least that way you have demonstrated that you are more then capable of doing their masters if committed.

Besides, if you do not get a 2:1 , doing a masters at somewhere of your choice will be problomatic.

Want to do the reminder of my degree whilst living at home.

I'm expecting to just about pass my first year - I find out on Monday. I think most of my modules will be fine, but the one with a potential problem is a really important core module, because I received no marks for one of the group projects. Irritatingly, this was completely unjustified, and was basically a mix-up whereby I couldn't point out what I'd done to the module leader because it had been renamed and split between other sections. My group complained about it, saying that I should definitely receive equal marks, but I've heard nothing more on whether they reinstated the mark - I doubt it. Hopefully I'll pass that module by doing well on the other components. If not, I'll probably have to resit it in the summer.

Yeah
I think they give you some discretion in your first year

Mine publishes your grade outside the exams building (unless you tick the box that withdraws your name from this). I got a slip yesterday saying I was 61/64 :s-smilie: but that could just be my uni
