I stupidly signed up for lacrosse at the uni sports fayre last week. Don't know anything about lacrosse. Anyone ever played it. There is a mixed team here apparently.

Just cos you sign up doesn't mean you actually have to do it.

according to my dictionary: a ball game invented by American Indians, now played by two teams who try to propel a ball into each other's goal by means of long-handled hooked sticks that are loosely strung with a kind of netted pouch. [C19: Canadian French: the hooked stick, crosier]

I wonder which is better, hockey or lacrosse. I played hockey at school, and really enjoyed it. If lacrosse is anything like lacrosse, it should be fun. Don't worry if you haven't played before. I'm guessing that you might learn quick enough.

I was forced to play lacrosse in my younger years at school, I think I wouldn't have hated it as much as I did if they didn't make us go out in the freezing cold to play it once a week!

Anyway, it is much harder than hockey (many have found it harder) because it can be difficult at first to pick up the ball. Once you get that bit sorted (you can pick it up the skill quite easily) you'll be fine, you just have to run around holding the ball and whack it at a few people now and again. Should be fun!

Lacrosse is a great sport, ive played for about 8 years (the field version) and its the best sport in the world. The version of lacrosse your talking about it Mixed, thats when men and women play together under womens rules. There is no contact and is nothing like what the others are describing as violent. Its really good fun but takes alot of skill to handle, cradle pass and shoot. Have fun, once you start playing it you wont be able to stop.

A girl in my school had her two front teeth knocked out by a lacrosse stick - she now has a pair of false teeth, so wear mouthguards or just run like the wind whenever you see any balls coming near you

It is derived from a red indian war game where the object was to kill half the other team

oh ok then  hmm, then just run like the wind or go into goal so you can get all padded up and wear a protective helmet

Teachers in my school (when they do the throw up) have also been whacked a few times with lacrosse sticks, I've even seen a couple cry a few times! I don't think the players at my school mean to be violent, the majority just have really bad ball skills so just waft their sticks around (violently) in the chance that they may catch the ball
