Tax Graduate Position

Hi everyone,

I've been offered a graduate position at a mid-tier (top 10) firm and am looking for some advice.

I had applied to the generic (direct) tax position which was offering the CA-CTA qualification pathway (my preferred pathway). They weren't able to offer me this position and have instead offered me a position in indirect/VAT which stipulates the ATT-CTA pathway.

Although it wasn't my initial plan, I think I would be happy to work in indirect tax, however, I'm really not sure on the qualification pathway.

Does anyone have any experience or advice that could help me make this decision?

If I were you I'd look through the last 2 or 3 years of posts on the A+F careers and DM anyone who was starting in tax (or an ongoing employee) to see what they advise.

if you are legally minded I think VAT/ indirect taxes are very interesting but its a great job for particular people. My gut reaction is I'd rather do an ACA/ ACCA / CTA route than ATT/ CTA as if you want to change paths you have a much broader qualification.

I wouldn't specialise this early. It comes with perks (indirect tax is growing in prominence), but a more general corporate tax role is ideal at the beginning. You can always ask for some indirect experience. The corp tax route is also likely to enable you to undertake an accountancy qualification in conjunction with the CTA, which will be great for the future.

Thanks for the advice. I'd tend to agree although, as mentioned, whilst this was the preferable route, I received the above offer instead.
