If someone learns French as a foreign language (does it at school, then uni and then lives abroad) and becomes fluent, can they do these things:

1) Sit in a french science lesson and understand whats happening?
Like, would they understand complicated explanations and terminology about blood cells, atoms, etc

Do they know words like condensation etc?

2) Can they sit in a french literature lesson and understand everything?

As a Brit who grew up in Switzerland I feel that 2 was easier than 1, mainly because there were fewer technical terms. I could still understand the explanations, but occasionally would have to look up the specialist words - something I still have to do having nearly finished an engineering degree!

Depending on the level of fluency it is possible to get a grasp of what the word means even if you don't know it.

Hope that helps!
