Hey, guys, I`m looking for some master degree in Media/Film/Screenwriting. I`ve shortlisted it to these universities and courses below. Can you give me some advice which is the best one? I`m looking for good and practical education, of course, but also an affordable city to live in /I am not from the UK/. I have been working in the radio industry for 9 years, but I am also interested in TV, film and writing.
Thanks!!

Hi. I’m not sure if you’re still looking for advice but I stumbled upon this thread and thought I’d help you out a bit.

While I’m not a masters student or even an undergrad student (I will hopefully be in September), I would highly recommend the University of Sunderland. St Peters campus (the one you’ll be studying at) has everything you need in a small compact space. You can literally get to the library, cafeteria or gateway building from the media Centre within about 30 seconds as they’re all right near each other. The facilities available to media students are top notch and are industry standard (in some instances, better than industry standard) and if you’re interested in MA Radio, Spark operates within the media centre and you can volunteer to help produce or present a show which will coincide with your studies. I’m going to be studying BA Media Production in September (providing results day goes well) and based on my experience at open days and their first choice summer school, I can a million percent tell you that you’ll be in great hands at the University of Sunderland. The opportunities within the media and skills you will come out with after you graduate will set you up for success in whichever area of media production you wish to pursue.

The city of Sunderland is a very welcoming city full of diversity. You will meet people of different cultures, nationalities, religions etc and the city is home to such attractions as the stadium of light, roker beach and the Sunderland Empire. Next to the City Campus is the Bridges which is a shopping centre full of high street stores (perfect for payday) and around the city, there are a range of local restaurants and pubs if you want to party with your mates or have a nice meal. Basically, the city of Sunderland is a wholesome city full of life and fun to be had.

In a nutshell, study your Masters at the University of Sunderland and thank me later!

Thank you for the recommendation NE1

Hi VASSETO
We obviously can't speak on behalf of the other universities but we can certainly recommend our MA Radio, Audio and Podcasting and our MA Media Production (Film and Television).
What are your long term career goals? You've picked two great courses of ours but they're slightly different in terms of what you'll learn and what experience you will gain. Knowing what you want to do in the future will help to determine this better.

MA Radio, Audio and Podcasting
Given that you have been working in the radio industry already, this course is a great springboard into a career either behind the mic or behind the scenes. The experience you gain will be practical and will include radio production, presentation and station management.
The course is integrated with our award-winning on-campus radio station Spark Sunderland and will provide opportunities to create your own creative podcasts and podcasts for external clients.

MA Media Production (Film and Television).
This course focuses on practical skills in media production. It will allow you to improve your knowledge and build your CV and get involved with high-quality media content, with technical skills that are in demand across the TV and Film industries.

With regards to the city of Sunderland, we are actually the second most affordable city in the UK, according to a 2018 ‘Graduate salaries in the UK’ survey conducted by Prospects Luminate. Living comfortably on a budget is much easier at Sunderland than other universities.

Sunderland house prices are also lower than in other parts of the country, which means lower-cost private renting and university accommodation. Travel costs are low too – our two main campuses are within walking distance from each other and the centre of town. Here is a link that provides some typical monthly living costs for you to get an idea.

Do reach out if you have any more questions

When making a decision about a master's course you should think carefully about what sort of learning you enjoy doing - whether you are more of a practical learner, or if you are happy doing lots of theoretical reading or research. Some master's courses are quite self-directed which means that you need to be super motivated in order to succeed in the course. The different subjects you have picked are quite varied in nature, production is very practical whereas screenwriting and scriptwriting are a lot more self-directed processes. Do you find that you work well by yourself, or do you thrive off being part of a team? These are the things you should be considering when looking at master's programme. Also, where do you want to end up afterwards? Do you want to write for a living? Or do you want to get a job with a production company or a studio that is making content? Do some research into the industry, see what graduate jobs are out there and what the different routes into the industry are.

It's not on your list, but SAE's MA/MSc Professional Practice (Creative Media Industries) is a great master's course because you can customise the award title e.g. you could pursue an MA Professional Practice (Scriptwriting for TV) if you wanted. The title is awarded based on your final project, so when you apply you can say what you want to work towards. It's taught online, which means that your learning won't be hindered by the current coronavirus pandemic, and it also gives you access to our global alumni community of 15,000 members around the world - we've got campuses in 50+ countries which is great for networking!
