Same for me. Once I mentioned there is a society LGBT to my friends, they were like, "really? unbelievable!" Well, most of them are quite religious (muslim / christian). I have no friends to bring. Plus I am not a clubbing person. But I do wish they do some social that doesn't involve clubbing. I would love to meet some people like me (bi).
Aww, we should go together then, you sound lovely.

They do have non clubbing things, they have things like laser quest once in a while and meet up for coffe or games at the gulbenkian and I think once they met in Mungo's I get the emails about them but Im too scared to go. Just waiting for the next one because I have a new found confidence and bravery, doing things I wouldn't usually do, so I wanna go now while it last and to make it continue.

I think I tried out one thing and then another and now the confidence is just growing and I can't stop going to things :p:

The LGBT soc. does hold reular committee meetings which technically anyone can sit on and provide input for (though you can't vote) - I can find out when they are if you like.

As you said the club event is only once a month but otherwise the committee hold some form of social usually every week on Tuesday evenings, though there hasn't been anything lately to my knowledge.

I've been to quite a few of their socials - they're very relaxed, often so much so that only the committee bother to show up. I usually go with a friend even if we spend the evening sitting on the outside so to speak, as long as it gets me away from working I don't mind.

I'd be more than happy to go with you guys if you wanted to arrange a meet up time and place, I don't know when there next event is though so it'd have to be a 'watch this space' type thing. In fact I just checked their Facebook group and there's nothing in particular coming up in terms of socials, and I haven't had anything through their mailing list in a while.

I'll update here if I get anything.

In addition to reviving this thread for the benefit of LGBT people applying to the uni, (so they can ask questions or what have you), I'd also like to remind current LGBT and other Kent students here that it's STARDUST tonight!

I will be there, and I expect others to be too. It would seem pointless to add I will be wearing a rainbow armband seeing as I might well not be the only one but yeh, say heylo if you see meeeee!

STILL haven't been to any LGBT things. Before I graduate I have to get involved :P I admit I'm STILL pretty terrified but I'm going to try to go. I'm just tooooo lonely, I want some non-str8 friends, it's painful.

Hey there. It's been a bit of a slow term for the society, but there will definitely be more events up and running from now until the end of term.

Are you on the society's mailing list? If not, PM me your Kent email address and I'll put you on. This is the best way to keep up to date on what's going on. Also make sure you check out the facebook group here.

If you need to talk to anyone, our committee are very friendly people. Feel free to get in touch with any of us.

The real question is... WHICH of the Ent Officers for the LGBT society is this? I'm going to guess the one I'm voting for.

I got there, was outside the Gulbenkian and I started feeling scared and saw it looked really busy so I did a U turn. It was cancelled anyway. And I didn't particularly want to see the film, just meet people.

Had to plug him as I think he'd do a really good job and he is a thoroughly decent guy.

You'd be correct I tried to make a thread encouraging people to vote in the elections but the mods wouldn't let it go through - advertising reasons I guess?

So yeah... PLEASE vote in the elections everyone! They're so important, the people who are elected into office next year have the power to change and shape your time at university so much.

As previously pointed out, I myself am running for a position - click here for more info

Ooo a conflict of interest, a link provided to Tom's support group and one provided to Colum's.

I believe Caeleb's in the Socialist's society though and I've heard they're all backing Tom because he's in the Socialist society too - makes sense I guess but shows why Caeleb put forward Tom's page to be supported.

The reason they won't let you advertise it on here could actually be a democracy and fairness reason as well as advertising. I know a lot of candidates have advertised messages on Facebook groups not affiliated with their campaigns e.g. the 'Parkwood 2008' group and have been forced to let the other candidates have the same chance to make it fair.

If I could just say, I really appreciate Tom's perspective on LGBT issues and he would be an extremely dedicated officer judging by his consistent contributions to other societies at Kent. Not taking away anything from Colum's campaign however - and of course vote for who you feel would best represent LGBT people on campus.

A fine point and well made I think, there is an argument that while Colum is more active within the LGBT society itself and thus would be more enthusiastic about representation and such forth... Tom is, on the other hand, more politically active - you could say 'getting involved with the things that matter' i.e. political societies and such forth. Not saying the LGBT soc. doesn't matter but the point I'm illustrating is that it shows a more politically minded person, something that could be more effective when representing LGBT rights. Equally Colum is a very passionate person who I'm certain would fight any issue to the last so either candidate is great really.

Oh and I know because I met you once and while I'd like to say I know everything about the students at Kent and sound like a really enigmatic figure... the truth is a friend mentioned you were in the Socialist society when I met you.

Not gonna hijack the thread, but I did smile when you said a friend 'mentioned' my political affiliation. Haha! Sure that they meant it in a good way of course...!

Oh no she really did mean it in a good way actually, glad to see some politically minded people I'm sure This thread's more for Kent LGBT chat than anything else so I don't think anyone minds this little diversion.

Good stuff :-)! Whatever the result of the elections, liberation campaigns seem to be moving up the agenda and that can only be a good thing. Looking forward to working alongside whoever is elected, (if I win my position that is) on campaigns for LGBT equality. One of my favourite quotes to come from the US elections was when Rosa Clemente, the Green VP candidate said: "we need to fight for a society not just where LGBT people have rights, but where they can be free"! I didn't hear any other politicians talk so openly like that.

Do people on here follow news and current affairs on human rights? The impression I get from TSR is that it isn't very 'political', and when it is, it's very Daily Mail-esque..
