He flirts endlessly but it’s just a “joke”

Idk how to feel. My friend and me ALWAYS flirt but it’s “joke”, however everytime I flirt back I think twice about it and question if I feel anything for him. Does he feel something too? What do I do to make sure that it’s just a “joke”.
Also he flirts over txt more than in person

Simply don't flirt back. Don't allow any of his advances until he realises he is losing you, so he is straightforward with you. Then you'll know the truth
Just talk about it with him.

Since he's your friend he may be playing it off as a joke cause he's either scared of rejection or he doesn't want to risk your friendship. Talk to him.
dont flirt back, just say 'are you flirting with me' with a serious tone not jokingly or he'll probs say 'oH aM I'

make it clear your both just friends and talk to other guys/flirt if u need to.
