Difference between a spot and a cold sore?

I have a spot forming on my upper lip and it’s doesn’t sting or anything but when should I worry about it becoming a cold sore? I’ve never had a spot there before.
cold sores tend to be very sore and tender and almost feel tingly when they form. also they crack very easily. this is all from personal experience by the way

So if this spot doesn't do any of those things in the next few days its probably not herpes?
you’d know straight away if it was a cold sore
