Why would a manager sack

I got sent home for turning up to work smashed.

I didn't get any response or meeting or anything just a couple of days later a P45 through post.

Why no communication?

Have you contacted your employer and asked?

There's not much reason to communicate. It's almost certainly gross misconduct and therefore you can be dismissed immediately. You weren't in a fit state for a conversation/explanation at the time, but the employer didn't think there was anything to discuss - see my 2nd sentence.
