Igcse English language B

Hi. Has anyone done edexcel igcse language B. I’m doing it in Jan. I first did it in June this year but I ended up getting a 6 which I was not satisfied with hence I’m resitting. This is what I got for each section:
A (Comprehension)-30/40
B (Creative writing 1)-17/30
C (Creative writing 2)-15/30

Would anyone who had done this exam be able to help me? I really want to come out with an 8/9 on this. Thanks

Hi!

So it isn't really necessary to resit:
1) I don't think any university requires higher than a 6 in English
2) It is going to be really time-consuming and a 6 is a really good grade

Anyways, back to your question:
For Section A: Which questions did you lose most of your marks on?

For Section B: I'd advise that you make sure that you ensure to cover all three points and ensure that you are being formal/ informal depending on the audience. Also, if it is a speech make it obvious, likewise, if it is a letter you could start by saying I'm writing this letter... (if you'd like - I personally wouldn't). Also, try and learn some general fancy vocab that you can throw in if relevant, you'd be surprised how useful random words can be.

For Section C: I personally would never do the descriptive writing piece because I find it too limiting and wouldn't do the story because I can't make up a good idea on the spot. I always do question 9, so for that I'd advise that you plan a quick argument for and against - try and think of some clever points - and make sure that you write at least 400 words but not more than 450. If you want to do the descriptive question I say don't do it, unless you've practiced a lot and are 100% sure you can describe without it sounding boring and without turning what you are writing into a story (personally, I think it is hard to write a good descriptive piece for 400 words, but that just me). If you pick the story make sure you know how it is going to end, even if you aren't sure of the full storyline. Also, try not to be explicit about it - by that I mean show don't tell. Don't say the girl had long blonde hair, but rather I stood entranced as her golden locks were tousled by the wind... or something like that :dontknow:

Hope this helps!

Hi. Thanks so much for the message, I really appreciate it. Are you doing this exam in January too?
I feel like it’s very necessary for me to resist it as I’m considering doing something English related later on in life. If you don’t mind me asking, how did you do in your mock exam? Thanks so much for the detailed points; I will consider the advise you’ve given me.

Also would you mind showing me an answer of yours to a question 9? I unusually don’t even look at it as I have never really understood how to do it.

You're welcome. No... I'm doing them in May.
Ah.. are you doing English (language or literature) A level? Personally, I'd call up the universities to see if it is even necessary to have higher than a 6 even for English related courses... Specially as you will still have to declare both grades on your UCAS form.
Anyways, for mocks I got a 9. However, I don't have my script so I wouldn't be able to scan it. Although in year 10 we also did a full paper and I got 89% and a 25/30 on question 9, so I can scan that maybe if I can find it and PM you.

Also, for both question 10 and 11, I'd advise you try out descriptionari to get some good descriptive phrases.
Hey just did this test as a mature student for the November 2020 session yesterday, im not sure how i have done as i have been marking my own past papers and english is subjective, my question is this, do we get a breakdown of each sections results (section A, B and C), also i wrote about 13 pages and its a very exhaustive exam requiring a lot stamina to write, how many pages did you write, and yes i know marks are not indicative of lengths of answers but I just want to get a feel of how many pages people wrote in total. I stuck to the bullet points in section B but my concern is that i didnt use both extracts and wrote about 3 and half pages, for section c i wrote 2 and 3/4 pages, and for section A i wrote 2 pages for questions 3 and 6 and and 2 and a half pages for the question 7.

Can’t believe I’m seeing this 3 years later lol.
Hope it all worked out for you and you got the the grade you wanted!

Yes it was such an exhausting exam; I think it was my longest one ever. So glad that’s over.

Hey..I love your interpretion of section C...and yes I also believe descriptive writing is probably the hardest one. Well, just got curious to know, how much did you get...if you don't mind sharing your grade...(btw Im very junior here...gonna give O-levels in may.)

Hiii. Yes somehow I managed to go from a 6 grade to a 9. I think it was after improving my creative writing for the section C.
Have you done the exam yet or are you doing it soon?

You don't have to resit btw, are you sure it's the best thing to do? Your grades aren't bad at all.

Do you know where exactly you lost your marks? I think this is critical to understand. Otherwise the advise we will give you wont be adapted for you.

In general for English I'm using youtubers channels to understand the content and Tilf website to practice with feedback and marking. I also do flashcards and learn all quotes ..
