Blood test, letter from doctor asking to 'discuss' them

y friend recently had a blood test over a week ago, then got a letter from the doctor asking her to come in to 'discuss' the results with her, is this really bad?

she does have a pretty poor diet as all she eats is cereal and salad, shes fit, but has been felling tired and has had headaches, could the results be about her diet at all?

do doctors call you in to discuss minor things like diet, glucose levels etc?
or does the letter mean its going to be really serious?

thanks.

If there's something that shows up in the tests because of it, then yes, they will.

Could be something like anaemia, but my medical knowledge is limited to say the least. There isn't much point in speculating - the best thing she can do is see the doctor.

Reply 3

Could be something like diabetes - where they'll then discuss how to apply her new needed diet.

Things like that, I doubt it's really serious.

Gl to her though.

i dont think its nessecarily bad. ive had tons of blood tests and the doctor always sends me a letter asking to dicuss the results with me in the surgery. i dont think its anything too serious (=

The letter isn’t anything to say that there is some bad news for your friend.

It’s just the policy of her particular surgery to send a letter to inform patients when their results are in so they can come and see / discuss them. When I had a blood test, I got a call from the secretary at my local surgery to inform me, she told me that they could not discuss anything over the phone but I had to come in.

It freaked me out too, but everything was normal.

They should inform people that all results need to be discussed whether good or bad, to avoid this ambiguous cause of stress.

I hope she’s fine by the way.

Could be anything. Clearly they've noticed something, but it may just be a warning sign or something entirely reversible.

Edit: Or intend, as above, it could be nothing.

Its prett normal for them to call you in. I got called in last week following a blood test, and it was just that I was anaemic and had a Vitamin D deficiency.

So no need to worry

blood test for what exactly?

If it was something really really serious I presume they would have phoned her and asked her to come in asap. At least that may be the case if they send out letters.

Not to freak others out, but obviously a phone call wouldn't always mean something serious. It's just that her friend got a letter instead, but if it was serious would have got a phonecal (if her doctor's normal way of contacting is by letter). See what I'm trying to say? If not quote me and I'll try to explain better.

if it was really serious they would call her right away... not send a letter.

It should be okay.
I received a letter saying to make an appointment to discuss my blood results. At first I crapped myself.
But at the place, all he did was talk me through it and there was nothing bad.

-Though it was to confirm that am anaemic (though thats no big deal).

What I was trying to say in a nutshell basically.. :p:
I just overly-complicate things. :s-smilie:

Anything worse (i.e. dangerous) they probably would've called to organise an appointment rather than a generic letter.

Edit: Woops, been said already LOL.

Oh, this stirred a memory.

Happened to me once... and it turned out that the results had come back clear, and was a complete waste of both our time, lol.

don't worry too much about it. if it was serious, they'd call.

Just wait to see what the Dr. has to say. You don't even know what kind of blood test she had done...

Hope for the best

I am NOT trying to disagree, its just that sometimes, when it IS BAD, they DONT say it over the phone....face to face is how it should be done, you know?

Well just to try and reassure you a little bit... at my surgery they expect you to contact the surgery so many days after a blood test to get the results. If you don't then they sometimes get the receptionist to phone, or send a letter to remind you. If it's nothing at all then sometimes they just don't bother. However, the one time that anything serious has been found in a test, the gp has personally phoned our house immediately. So...I wouldn't be too concerned if it is a letter. As many more have said, if it was something urgent, the doctor wouldn't risk royal mail ;-)
