does anyone know if any unis are in clearing for 2020 entry for Medicine?

Have you read the last few pages of this thread? Info is also summarised on the first page

Did they say if they would look at all applications including those which do not meet the UCAT cut off?

Why would they do that? They are in clearing deliberately and have their pick of very good applicants - they have no need to lower entry requirements.

I mean, ngl my UCAT is slightly below sgul cut off but I got all my interviews at my bMAT and UCAT unis.

* I had extenuating circumstances for the UCAT (my mum was in the ICU with her cancer op complications) for the entire duration of the UCAT sittings

And my other grades at GCSE and predictions and my PS etc were acc really good

Soooo, on that note, ur UCAT score doesn’t really define how ‘good’ u are

(Oh, and I applied for standard medical courses)
I got rejected from Leicester pre interview and now they’re in clearing, doesn’t make sense

What?😂 same I got rejected pre-interview for A100, but how doesn’t it make sense??

I

I got the same reply as well. Apart from I haven't done the UCAT.

Sorry so did you apply generally for 2020 entry or have you just applied through clearing? I planned to apply for 2021 entry but wasn't sure if it was possible to apply fir 2020 through clearing if you haven't already sat your UCAT. I plan to sit mine in the next 4-6 weeks. Plus I'm a grad and already have my degree and a level results.

Offering places in Clearing is a deliberate choice for the medical schools which do so. They will already have rejected many applications before interview for whatever reason, but want to find the best unplaced candidates during Clearing to fill their quotas.

The two issues are unrelated.

(1) Whether the UCAT / UKCAT is a valid assessment or not is beside the point. We can argue it until the cows go home but it's clear that the GMC wanted admissions test to play more role in the future. This is not the thread for this discussion though

(2) The system wants you to achieve a certain UCAT score to be eligible (for that med school) - so you've got to be fulfilling that criteria. There's no point saying whether a high score makes you a better doctor or not... Same with A Levels and GCSEs, 3 A*s and 10 A*s respectively do not make you a better doctor. You'll need to fulfill the criteria whether you agree with it or not.

Note: UCAT and its predecessor the UKCAT was only introduced in 2005 and most consultants these days would not have taken it. You can't argue that most of these pre UKCAT doctors are not good doctors though. But as I said that's beside the point because you have got to play "the game" and "the game" requires you to have a certain UCAT score.

(1) Leicester A100 is not in clearing

(2) Med schools deliberately enter clearing to find better candidates so why doesn't it make sense?

hi!!!
i’m thinking of applying to leicester’s A199 foundation year course, but i’m also on two waitlists and am planning on applying to SGUL on A Level results day too. i was just wondering if i do get a verbal offer from them how long would i realistically have to decide, as naturally if i put the 6 year course as my firm i couldn’t keep that and get in off my waitlists or apply to SGUL and obviously i would rather be in a 5 year course! i’m just wary that if i get a verbal offer from leicester but wait until after an SGUL/waitlist decision which i’m assuming would be late august, by the time i put it in track, could they change their minds??

I’ve just emailed them again asking about a new ucat. Hopefully they can now answer this as previously whenever I asked them they were not in clearing yet and so their reply would just say that we are not intending on going into clearing for medicine.

It may well take them 3 weeks to make offers anyway. Are you definitely eligible for A199 - the requirements are fairly narrow? The universities get A level results about a week before students do, so your wait list universities may be able to give you some indication of your chances in just over 4 weeks.

If you apply to sgul in clearing, can you apply to other uni’s in clearing on results day as well?

i’m almost certain i meet all the requirements but i was going to ring them and double check just to be safe. i’m pretty sure i’ll get an interview at least as i scored 59.5 on their academic scoring, but it’s my interviews that let me down this year so i’m really going to focus on that. i’m hoping that i’ll be able to keep the A199 offer as an insurance of some sorts by getting the verbal offer of BBB and then seeing if i could get one of the other standard A100 unis. the only other thing i’m thinking is if it is actually worth going into a foundation year, as i’m not sure whether that would make me a weaker applicant for a competitive specialisation route post-degree
