how is english difficult to get into?
if i was applying for english (which i never will) i would just make millions (exaggeration - see it's english!) of essays on some major books like lord of the flies.

........i have no clue on what lord of the flies is about though...................or harry potter for that matter........what is harry potter?
I would say because it has a lot of applicants perhaps.
You strike me as an idiot

    I'd say:

    Medicine
    Vetinary
    Law
    Dentistry
    Economics (gulp for me )
    English Literature

To an extent (depending on where you apply):

    History
    Politics/international relations
    and something like Biological sciences/Biochemistry
They get something like 33% of students through clearing.
And I don't really agree with History being that competitive, I've rarely come across someone who was rejected for it (save at Oxbridge).

History is generally a 3A course at top universities, it is very competitive. Modern Languages on the other hand...:p:

English just is, because most people who apply for English tend to be very good at the subject, and fairly academic.

You don't "make" an essay .

You come across as moronic iin your posts.

The question wasn't about top universities, it was about the courses in general.

And most modern languages offers are AAB+, thanks.

LOL I was actually going to spell VETERINARY, but I just saw a lot of people spelling Vetinary, so I thought I was wrong. :p:

History is competitive across the board. It is exceptionally competitive at the top places, hence the fact that the most top universities offer 3As for it. Look I'm not even a historian and I can see this.

And I was taking the piss about modern languages as a riposte to the chap who claimed that history wasn't competitive.

I put Maths there but it actually depends. If its a decent university, it will normally ask for at least 3B's. But a lot of them will ask for ABB+ and some will even ask you to have done Further Maths (or give you alternatives such AEA or STEP) and most people who do Further Maths are actually clever so thats why I think its competitive.
