In primary school we sung "jesus' hands were kind hands, doing good to all'

and then during middle school we had songs like Autumn Days (where the grass is jewelled and the silk inside a chesnut shell. Jet planes meeting in the air to be refueled and the things I love so I mustn't forgeeeeet, no I mustn't forgeeeet, to say a great big thankyou I mustn't forget!) and then we had the 'I am the lord of the dance said he' and our teacher also made us sing 'the holly and the ivy' which she'd so kindly re-arranged it in her own special way so it sounded like a hymn rather than a carole. lol.
    YES!!!!

Autumn Days was one of my favourites

Our school leavers song (primary) was 'We are the Young' - not sure my lyrics are right though

We are the young, the children of the world
we hold tomorrow in our hands.
We are the young, the promise of a brighter day,
the future waits at our comand.

Teach us well, teach us how to care,
give us love, love that we can share.
And we'll walk hand in hand in the light of the guiding sun...

    We are the young..

God everybody cried at that..

In secondary school we sang all hymns :/ At the masses (haha, yeah, we had lots of those. Start of School Mass, Christmas Mass, Easter Mass, End of Year Mass, Leavers' Mass) the choir had to learn all the songs and be present so that everyone would join in...which they never did. My favourite of the holy-joe songs was The Lord Bless You And Keep You.

haha same on the religion thing, but some are just so catchy lol...

and it depends on the hymn...some of them are just "yes come on, let's finish and get on with our lives before I kill the person next to me who's actually bothering to SING" and then there are others (like Jerusalem) where my entire school just belts it out like they'll never be able to sing ever again after that :lolz:
the funny thing is, when we actually had to do them i hated it, it was boring most of the time until the boys started singing badly and loudly then it was too funny and we would get told off for laughing.
but like now im not at school i can see the fun side to them!

haha well i'm at a school which has chapel almost every morning until the end of year 13 (grrr!!!) so I have a few more Jerusalem's left lol

sucks you were told off for laughing - you should have laughed more at the people telling you off just telling them laughing's healthy

Just thinking about singing Autumn Days makes me smile

Let There Be Peace on Earth is the only other song I can think of that hasn't been mentioned already.

I remember every winter we had to sing Silent Night, but for some reason they made us sing it in german. Nobody ever knew why.

Now grandma's a person who everyone likes
She brought you a train and a bright shiny bike
But lately she hasn't been coming to dinner
And last time you saw her she looked so much thinner
Now your mom and your dad said she moved to Peru
But the truth is she died and some day you will too
    Lalalala...

We didn't have to learn an instrument, but pretty much everyone played the recorder in the school band lol!
