I have a general distaste for background watching because I can never have a discussion with anyone about it even though they've claimed they've watched it. They really didn't and missed out on context for almost everything in the shows storyline. With that in mind I usually just suggest sitcoms like Porridge or the IT Crowd. You can tune into any episode and get a good feel for things.
